Diocese to be consecrated to Mary at Rosary Rally By Jerry Zufelt Editor GREENSBURG — Bishop Edward C. HURRICANE RELIEF The diocese received $191,910 from a special collection held in September. Donations are still being accepted at catholiccharitiesusa.org and crs.org. Malesic will consecrate the Diocese of Greensburg to Mary, Our Lady of Fatima during the annual Rosary Rally Oct. 7 at the Bishop Connare Center. The consecration and Rosary Rally are part of a celebration at the Connare Center that marks the 100th anniver-sary of Mary’s appearance to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. Mary appeared to the children — Lucia Santos and her cousins Francisco and Marta Santo — on the 13th day of the month from May to October in 1917 during the height of World War I. Her messages included praying the rosary for world peace. The fifth and final First Saturday Mass in observance of the Fatima centennial will be celebrated Oct. 7, by Father William J. Lechnar, coordinator of the Rosary Rally, at 9 a.m. in the St. Joseph Chapel at the Connare Center. Eucharistic adoration will follow, and the sacrament of reconciliation will be available until 11. The Rosary Rally, which has tradi-tionally been celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, will begin at 11 a.m. Bishop Malesic will preside at the rally, offer remarks and lead the prayer of consecration of the diocese to Our Lady of Fatima. The Diocesan Heritage Center will be open after Mass for people to visit the “Petals of Love—The Rosary in Art and Faith” exhibit, which commemorates the Fatima anniversary and shows diocesan veneration of Mary and the rosary. The Catholic bishops of Pennsylva-nia consecrated the commonwealth to Our Lady of Fatima at a special Mass Sept. 27 at St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg.
